2020 Housing Trends

nature, garden, lawn

Stay-at-home orders and quarantines have upended many lives and as a result: a total reinvention of homes. Playrooms have become school rooms and the spare bedroom is now the home office. The garage is the home gym and backyards are the playground and destination for outdoor dining.

What Realtors are seeing

  • demand for housing driven by low interest rates
  • many qualified buyers
  • homeowners who would like to sell but do not need to sell immediately
  • homeowners staying put for the time being while making plans to sell when coronavirus eases

Buyers are considering

  • more outdoor space
  • pools – homes with pools or yards large enough for a pool
  • working from home now allows people to move long distances from their former office spaces
  • open floor plans are less desirable
  • spaces with doors that close for privacy
  • areas where students can study
  • home office space

Zoom or bust

Another interesting trend, termed “Zoom towns” by Realtors and journalists, is the boom occurring in certain areas as remote work takes off.  Some folks, newly able to work from home, are moving away from city centers to the outskirts of metropolitan areas.  Now that commuting is no longer a factor, the lure of ample open space and recreational opportunities is irresistible to many.  Low interest rates, coupled with affordable prices in these locales, make this an alluring option for many looking to make a change.

If personal and/or professional changes have revealed competing priorities in your home life, talk to a real estate professional about your options.
